Leo Leontowitsch Gorbatschow, operator of a vodka distillery in St. Petersburg, fled with his family from his Russian homeland to Berlin during the October Revolution, where he received permission to produce vodka in 1921. The brand name, the characteristic onion tower bottle and the blue label were registered as a trademark by L. Gorbatschow & Co. in 1923.
