The brand was founded in 1865 by José Gener, five years after he started growing tobacco. His name is still on the boxes. The cigars of Hoyo de Monterrey are longfiller premium cigars of mild flavor. The brand is now in Cuban state ownership. There is another cigar variety of the same name made in Honduras.
